PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An 18-year-old driver who police said was intoxicated slammed into an unoccupied Portland Police Bureau cruiser late Friday as the cruiser was being used to block traffic after an earlier crash.

The marked police vehicle with its lights flashing was blocking Northeast Sandy Boulevard at 112th Avenue while officers were investigating the scene of where a pedestrian was hit by a driver.

Officers said that at 11:12 p.m. Damian Begay was headed east in a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu at what police say was a speed above the posted limit. He did not stop at the intersection and hit the cruiser, leading to significant damage to both vehicles.

Begay was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries, and after investigating police gave him citations for driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving.

According to the PPB, the pedestrian struck in the initial crash was not seriously injured.
