PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Customers flooded local shops and restaurants Saturday for "Small Business Saturday," an annual event where small businesses open their doors and encourage community members to shop local.

Portland's Northwest 23rd Avenue was the place to be. Corporate coffee chains had nothing on Java Hound Coffee Bar as customers flooded in to grab a hot drink.

"We're just a coffee cart, competing against a bunch of big chains around here," Java Hound’s Michael Towne said. "That's one thing I love about this city. Just spreading the love, coming out and supporting us. Couldn't ask for anything better"

Small businesses across Portland saw big turnouts, with many offering major deals to draw shoppers out.

Customers like Doug Kime, who we found patiently waiting for his wife outside a local boutique, said it was about showing support and convenience. His family decided to forgo the crowds and chaos of Black Friday and instead opted to scout for sales in a laidback, local setting.

"We enjoy coming up here every year. I buy most of my presents for Christmas,” he said. "It's nice to support your community.”

Every year small business owners prepare for their own post-Thanksgiving rush, and this year local companies on Northwest 23rd, many still reeling from the October natural gas explosion, definitely felt the love.
