Sen. Wyden stops in Portland to talk charitable giving

Posted: Updated:

Oregon senator Ron Wyden was in Portland Saturday talking about donating to charity and how he is working to make it easier to do.

Speaking at Community Warehouse in Northeast Portland, Wyden talked about strengthening charitable donation laws.

Community Warehouse gives furniture and home items to people in need after they move into a new place.

Wyden is on the committee that writes the country's tax laws, and, along with a Republican senator from South Dakota, he has proposed a bi-partisan bill to help re-write some of the tax code regarding charitable giving.

“The tax system provides an opportunity to help so many vulnerable people,” he said. “And the tax write-off is one of America’s great policy success stories.”

Wyden said he doesn't think charitable tax write-offs should be removed and also encouraged people to donate to charities all year long, just not during the holiday season.

“My job is to strengthen and expand the opportunities for folks who would like to help wonderful organizations to do so, and do so all year round,” he said.
