Coaching changes at Hillsboro High after month-long investigation

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

The investigation into former Hillsboro High School Coach Adam Reese is now over, and district administrators say he will stay on as a teacher but will no longer be coaching students.

The news comes after a month-long investigation that stemmed from an incident involving Reese at a varsity football game between Hilhi and Milwaukie on October 13.

That incident was reported to district leaders on October 26, and Reese was placed on routine administrative leave on the 27 pending the outcome of a fact-finding investigation led by administrators.

According to a district spokesperson, Reese was upset with the team for playing poorly in the first half of the game on October 13.

There was a report of a player rolling his eyes, although it’s not clear if that was directed at Reese or a fellow player.

The investigation found that at some point Reese grabbed a student and was involved in what they describe as “verbal aggressiveness” and profanity.

In a statement to FOX 12, the district called Reese’s behavior as a coach “inconsistent” with their “philosophy for athletics” but noted that the issues did not carry over into his work as a teacher.

“Mr. Reese’s interactions with students in his capacity as a coach are inconsistent with the school’s and district’s philosophy for athletics. Such an inconsistency was not found when examining his role as a teacher.

“Coaching positions are at-will extra-duty assignments that are determined on a yearly basis. They are separate and apart from teaching assignments. Mr. Reese has returned to Hilhi as a teacher, but will no longer serve as a coach for the school.”

Reese coached football and wrestling at Hillsboro High. A new coaching staff is already in place for the wrestling team, and student-athletes and their families have been made aware of the changes.

Some students showed their support for Reese earlier this month by wearing ribbons at school.
