SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The Salem City Council voted Monday night to censure and accept the resignation of one it’s members.

Councilman Daniel Benjamin came under fire after he shared a post on Facebook showing drivers running through a blockade of protesters.

Many in the Salem community found the video disturbing and called and emailed their council members calling for Benjamin to step down.

At Monday night’s meeting Benjamin did just that.

Following two votes by the council, many in attendance got up and spoke during public comment.

“There are some that believe Mr. Benjamin was simply exercising his freedom of speech or that his comments where politically incorrect but I want to be clear that bigotry is bigotry,” one man said.

"Thank you for taking this seriously and we appreciate all the effort that went in to encouraging him to resign we know many of you talked to him personally to make that happen,” another person said.

Some people were ready to speak out about the incident that the council was moved to an auditorium at the library.

On November 22, Benjamin posted from his campaign Facebook page an apology that read in part:

"I would like to issue an apology regarding a video that I shared on my personal Facebook page. My intention by sharing that video was to bring awareness that people were being killed in the streets of our cities... and I do not condone either side in regards to the violence that has been perpetrated on innocent people.”

According to the City Manager, the city will need to hold a special election to fill the vacancy, they council is set to meet next week to discuss that matter.
