PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland police arrested a man early Tuesday after he assaulted a police sergeant and then led officers on a foot chase through a section of Southeast Portland.

The Portland Police Bureau said the sergeant attempted to pull over a man riding a motorcycle for reckless driving near Southeast 83rd Avenue and Toleman Street around 12:06 a.m. Later it was discovered that the motorcycle was stolen.

The rider was identified as 26-year-old James Gallaway.

Gallaway quickly drove away, but the PPB sergeant was able to catch up with him.

Gallaway then allegedly struck the sergeant in the face with an unknown object and fled on foot down Toleman Street.

The sergeant said Gallaway was armed with a handgun. Officers began establishing a perimeter.

The suspect was confined to a small area but did not surrender to officers.

After dodging in and out of yards and climbing onto at least one building, the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU) were dispatched to the scene and took Gallaway into custody.

Police are still searching for more evidence in the area.
