PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The driver arrested for hitting and killing a pedestrian in southeast Portland and leaving the scene of the collision was sentenced to one year in prison.

Frederick James Ryerson Jr., 21, pleaded no contest Monday to charges of second-degree manslaughter and hit and run involving injuries.

Police said Ryerson hit 34-year-old Christopher Chandler at 2 a.m. on Sept. 27, 2015.

Witnesses said a white four-door Honda Civic hit Chandler near Southeast 29th Avenue and Stark Street and continued heading west without stopping.

Another witness called police to report seeing a car matching the description of the suspect vehicle.

Officers found the car near Southeast 20th Avenue and Oak Street. Probable cause was established to identify Ryerson as the driver, according to investigators.

Chandler was a radiology technician and a musician. Friends said he was helping load band equipment into a van when he was hit.

Ryerson was sentenced to one year in prison Monday.
