A burglar found with half his body hanging from an apartment window in Salem attempted to run from officers, but he was caught after falling into a creek, according to police.

Police responded to a burglary report near Hawthorne Avenue Northeast and Felina Avenue Northeast at 4:57 a.m. Saturday.

A witness said a man was peering into an apartment and shining a flashlight through the windows.

As officers were responding to that call, they received another call about a man who entered an occupied home on the 3800 block of Felina Avenue and ran away.

Officers checking the area spotted the suspect hanging out of an apartment window on the 4400 block of Felina Avenue.

The man's upper body was inside the home, with his legs hanging out of the window.

As officers approached him, they said the suspect jumped out of the window and ran away. He climbed over a fence, jumped into thick brush, fell into a creek and attempted to continue running, according to police, but he was surrounded by officers and arrested.

Timothy Christian Desjarlais, 20, was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary, interfering with a police officer and parole violation.

Investigators said he had entered two separate apartments and three vehicles in the area. Property stolen from the cars was returned to the victims.

Desjarlais was previously arrested by Salem police on July 30 on burglary and theft charges. In that case, a woman said she woke up to a stranger moving her pillow in her apartment. Police identified the suspect as Desjarlais.
