PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An assault suspect was indicted on the charge of murder after the man he stabbed in downtown Portland died, according to police.

Charles Anthony Longjaw was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday. He was arrested Nov. 21 in connection with a stabbing the previous night.

Emergency crews responded to Southwest 3rd Avenue and Oak Street at 6:02 p.m. Nov. 20 and located 43-year-old Mark Sandoval Whelan suffering from stab wounds.

Whalen was taken by ambulance to the hospital with serious injuries that required multiple surgeries. Police said Whalen died Saturday.

Officers canvassing the area found a blood trail leading to the intersection of Southwest 4th Avenue and Pine Street. Limited information that night indicated two men ran from the area, with one described as a Hispanic or Native American man in his 30s.

Assault detectives were able to identify Longjaw as the suspect and he was subsequently arrested. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on assault charges, as well as a parole violation.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on the murder charge in court Thursday.
