St. Helens student seeks to raise awareness about bone marrow diseases

Posted: Updated:
ST. HELENS, OR (KPTV) -

St. Helens High School senior Victoria Roberts battled a bone marrow disease for nearly 10 years.

Now she is healthy, happy and hoping to raise awareness about the illness she faced.

When she was six years old, Roberts was diagnosed with aplastic anemia.

In simple terms, her bone marrow stopped making blood cells.

But thanks to several experimental treatments, Roberts was able to defeat her illness.

For her senior project, Roberts is teaming up with the bone marrow registry Be The Match to run a bone marrow drive.

She said giving bone marrow is one of the best things you can do.

“"It is one of the best gifts you can give somebody ever and you will not regret it if you do.”

The bone marrow drive will take place Friday at St. Helens High School from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
