PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man saved his neighbor's life by pulling him out of a burning trailer Thursday morning.

A spokesman for Portland Fire & Rescue told FOX 12 that the man inside the trailer was smoking while on oxygen therapy.

He was able to make a phone call for help before it was too late, though, dialing the number for his next-door neighbor.

That neighbor, Dale Wood, told FOX 12 there was no one on the other end of the line when he picked up the phone around 9 a.m., but he said he had a bad feeling about it so he went outside to check.

That's when he saw smoke coming from his 70-year-old neighbor's trailer and rushed over to get him out.

“I went in and he was laying on the floor,” Wood explained. “I pulled him out, set him on the steps of the trailer right here. I went in tried to put the fire out, but there was too much smoke.”

Wood said that the man's oxygen tanks blew up in the fire about 30 seconds after they got out.

Firefighters credit Wood with saving the man's life before they could get there. They also noted that as crews started putting water on the fire, a power line burned and then fell on the metal trailer, forcing them to stay clear of the trailer until power crews could turn off the electricity.

Portland fire and rescue officials say this incident should serve as a reminder for anyone using an oxygen tank or living with someone using oxygen tank that smoking can lead to a major fire quickly.
