PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A 90-year-old Portland man plead guilty to criminally negligent homicide charges related to a car crash that killed a woman in March 2016.

Attorneys for Edmond Balding spent most of Friday in court explaining the charges against him. The attorneys said Balding had trouble understanding he hit and killed a pedestrian in March.

On March 18, Amber Michelle Lapine, 34, was hit by a car driven by Balding at Northeast 117th Avenue and Glisan Street. Balding remained on scene after the crash.

Lapine died nine days after the crash.

In court on Friday, Balding eventually understood the charges against him and plead guilty to the charges.

"I'm very, very sorry and I have to agree that all of you people are right. I've got a wife in the hospital and problems of my own," said Balding.

Balding was sentenced to five years probation, a lifetime license suspension, and loss of his car.
