Road conditions slick in Government Camp, chains required

Posted: Updated:

Snow is already on the mountains. And with more on the way, many people were up there enjoying the fun, but getting there can be slick.

As drivers got closer to Mount Hood, they couldn't believe how much snow had fallen.

"Yeah, it's crazy right now," said driver Bailey Price. "I haven't seen anything like this in Oregon yet."

On the shoulder, drivers were seen getting their cars ready.

"To this point it was fine, but the sign says further up it’s going to be bad," said driver Matt Hoffman.

Earlier, Hoffman and his friends practiced how to put chains on. He says he's no pro, but he got the job done.

"It's mountain territory, that's what you got to do," he said.

Once drivers got up the hill safely, they came to places to have fun. People had many choices – from snowball fights to hitting the slopes and tubing.

Back on the roads, even though snowplows headed up and down the highway, chains are needed.

Some drivers learned the hard way that it takes a bit more effort to put them on.

"Well it being our first time it was probably the biggest problem and this snow," said driver Sam Allen.

His friend added, "We just didn't know how to do it, so trying to learn in the cold wet snow just makes it even worse."

Oregon State Police say that chains are required right now and the folks at the Department of Transportation say if you need to put on those chains – know how to use them.
