New student health clinic opens at Roosevelt High School

Posted: Updated:

Roosevelt High School marked the 30th anniversary of their first student health center by opening a new one.

Officials cut the ribbon to the new state-of-the-art health clinic Monday morning.

The clinic helps students with immunizations, reproductive health and check-ups. Treatment will focus on children ages 5 to 18, even if they don't have insurance.

Some of the clinic's original staff reflected on how far the health center has come in 30 years.

"Gradually over time as people learned what the clinic was really about, and their own children experienced using it and seeing it and having their friends use it, it became accepted practice to have it here," said Sue Imbrie, who was the original lead nurse at Roosevelt High School.

There are more than 13 school-based health centers across the Portland area.

Officials say children and teenagers visited them over 17,000 times last year.
