PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Most of the Benson Bubbler drinking fountains have been shut off in downtown Portland due to cold temperatures.

The Portland Water Bureau began turning off the fountains Tuesday morning. If left on, they could pose a safety hazard on sidewalks with temperatures dropping below freezing.

A few bubblers will remain on to provide water to people who rely on them as their primary water source. Those fountains are at Southwest 5th Avenue and Burnside Street, one on the waterfront near the west end of the Steel Bridge and one under the Burnside Bridge.

Once temperatures warm up, all of the bubblers will be turned back on. FOX 12 meteorologists have forecasted high temperatures in the 30s on Wednesday and Thursday, with lows in the 20s.

By next week, high temperatures are expected to be in the mid-40s.

Anyone who sees water running in the street or experiences an urgent water problem is asked to contact the Portland Water Bureau's emergency hotline at 503-823-4874.
