ROCK CREEK, OR (KPTV) -

Undocumented students at the Rock Creek campus of Portland Community College rallied together Monday to “come out of the shadows.”

A few dozen students attended the rally, wearing shirts saying “Undocumented, Unafraid, Unapologetic,” sharing their own stories and turning to each other for support, while adding they want campus leaders to support them, too.

Student Christian Calzada was brought to the United States as a 1-year-old when his parents came here from Mexico City. He’s now a second-year student at PCC and wants to transfer to the University of Portland.

Calzada told FOX 12 it’s important for PCC to take action now to protect students like him, especially in such a heated political climate.

There are concerns that President-elect Donald Trump will do away with an existing program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

“The people who we’re scared of right now are the people who are publicly opening up and saying, ‘We don’t want you here,’” Calzada said. “And now we want to have the conversation of why.”

Students are calling on campus leaders to make PCC a sanctuary campus where immigration officials would not be welcome.

The president of PCC, Mark Mitsui responded, telling FOX 12 the school plans to support its immigrant students.

“We have received the request to make PCC a sanctuary campus, and the proposal is currently under consideration by the college’s board of directors. While it is difficult to predict future federal policy changes, PCC will continue to support its immigrant students and safeguard the privacy rights for all students.”
