PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Experts are sharing tips for protecting your home as a blast of cold, wintry weather is expected to bring snow and freezing rain to the Portland area on Thursday.

Fox 12 spoke with the experts at Falk Hardware in Beaverton, where cold weather supplies are flying off the shelves.

“This was our section for salts, de-icers,” said employee Charles Bowen, pointing to an empty shelf. “As you can tell we’ve been very popular this week.”

For the first time Bowen can remember, employees had to order emergency shipments of various supplies to help restock the store.

When it comes to preparing your home, Bowen said the top of your list should be protecting your pipes and faucets.

“If you don’t have them covered now you need to get in this week. Immediately,” Bowen said.

Bowen said he starts thinking about his pipes when temperatures hit 36 degrees.

But this week in Portland, our daytime highs may not reach that.

He said foam covers are a cheap, easy way to protect yourself.

“One broken pipe can cost you thousands of dollars to replace underneath the house so this is a good way to protect that,” he said.

Don’t forget to leave your indoor faucets dripping, especially in homes built in the mid 1960’s or earlier when insulation wasn’t quite as good as it is now.

Also, disconnect your outdoor hose, drain it and cover that faucet.

Next on your list should be weather-stripping your doors and windows to keep the cold air out and your electrical bill down.

“People have been coming in and getting the bottom seals for garage doors, front doors, back doors, sliders,” he said.

Don’t forget about your patio door; plastic covers with an adhesive edge are available to provide an extra barrier of protection.

“I mean $10 and you get one whole sheet and that will probably save you $20 on your electrical bill,” Bowen said. “My electric bill was $110 last month. I put insulation on all my windows all my doors and its $70 now.”
