PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Tow truck and Uber drivers said they have already started gearing up for Thursday's storm.

According to Keith at Auto Haus towing, he and his team have dry fitted their trucks with the proper chains for icy conditions and have began using something called a sock tire.

Keith said the latest technology has helped over the last year.

"The application for us is easy and it takes about thirty seconds versus using a chain, which we use too, but these are just fantastic," said Keith.

He said with the long days come long hours for his guys. So to make sure they are safe, he tells them to 'rest up' before big storms.

"Everyone employed with us is working those days - every bodies on, there's no day off that day," Keith said.

For people like Ricardo Zyelinske, who drives for Uber, he has the option of providing a service to the public.

"We kind of make our decisions whether it's safe or not safe, we're our own boss," said Zyelinske.

And while he doesn't have the latest gear like Keith, Zyelinske said he makes sure he buys all-season tires and puts chains on his Dodge caravan when it's necessary.

"I'm ready to chain up the vehicle so I am prepared," Zyelinske said.

Both men said the job is all about being safe and using your own discretion.

"If you don't have to go out, don't go out, just stay home its only going to be one day we'll be back to normal on Friday, its not worth it," said Keith.

Business for Zyelinske on the other hand picks up. But he too said safety comes first.

"I'm more experienced than the average Portland or Oregonian in the snow or inclement type of weather so I would do it simply to make sure the people that need a ride are getting it and hopefully provide a safe ride," Zyelinske said.

We reached out to Uber who provided a statement that read:

"It's regular protocol for us to keep driver partners up to date and well informed about weather and driving conditions. We will be monitoring the weather and encouraging drivers to use caution when they are driving in the next couple days."
