The University of South Florida’s Willie Taggart will be University of Oregon’s next head football coach.

ESPN first reported the hire Wednesday morning.

The University of Oregon football program later posted an announcement on Twitter.

Taggart and Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen were the two finalists up for the Oregon job, according to ESPN.

In a news release, UO Athletics officials called Taggart "one of college coaching's brightest offensive minds and a proven winner."

Taggart led the University of South Florida Bulls to a 10-2 record this season. Three years ago, the team was 2-10.

Taggart replaces former UO head coach Mark Helfrich, who was fired in November after a disappointing season.

FOX 12 caught up with Oregon's Freshman Safety, Brady Breeze, from Central Catholic. Breeze will meet the new coach Thursday morning.

"You can just tell he knows how to bring his team back and bring that fire back. I think that's what he is going to do. He is going to bring that edge back where everyone was just so fired up and ready for the game and make it fun again. Not make it so much like a job where like, 'hey, I am I want to go to the NFL in three years'. I should be, 'hey, I want to make a National Championship in one year or in two years or maybe by my senior year we win a National Championship. So, I feel like that is what the players are looking for, the best season possible," said Breeze.

The university said Taggart would be introduced at a news conference Thursday morning in Eugene.
