PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Police have identified the man who was shot and killed by an officer in southeast Portland, but investigators don't know what caused him to shoot at officers and then confront them with a rifle.

Police responded to a home near Southeast 148th Avenue and East Burnside Street at 10:54 p.m. Monday.

A man fired shots at officers from inside the home. Police believe he was shooting a handgun, before he exited the home holding a rifle.

Steven Wayne Liffel, 52, was shot by Officer Lawrence Keller, a 22-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau.

Liffel died at the scene and the medical examiner determined he died of a single gunshot wound. Liffel lived in an apartment complex near the shooting scene, according to police.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

Investigators said they have no information indicating Liffel had a history of mental illness. Toxicology results are expected in a few weeks.

No other details were released about the case pending the completion of the investigation and grand jury.

Anyone with additional information about this investigation is asked to contact Detective Erik Kammerer at 503-823-0762, erik.kammerer@portlandoregon.gov.
