PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

If winter weather does become an issue Thursday, and drivers decide to venture out in it, travel experts want them to make sure their cars are ready.

According to experts with AAA, the first thing drivers should do is look under the hood to make sure all of the fluids like antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid are topped off and everything is in working order.

Steve Fox with AAA explained that now is the perfect time of year to give cars a once over to make sure they are ready for winter.

Fox also said motorists should check their tire pressure and make sure the tread on their tires isn’t worn down too much.

He also advised that anyone traveling long distances or over mountain passes have an emergency kit. An example kit put together by AAA has a snow shovel, first aid supplies, flashlights, candles and gloves.

Fox also reminded drivers to make sure their cell phone is charged and to keep a charger in their vehicles.

Most importantly, he said to check the battery in the car, taking note of corrosion or loose connections.

“So when the temperatures really dip, your battery has to be ready to start that vehicle,” Fox said. “So what you’re looking for on the terminals is any corrosion or loose connections in your battery here. So take a look for that. Make sure those connections are tightened down, and look for any corrosion that would inhibit your battery from starting.”

Fox also noted that drivers taking longer road trips should pack items like water and survival snacks in case drivers get stuck in traffic or stranded due to road conditions.
