Chains required in certain parts of Portland ahead of snow storm

Posted: Updated:

The mountain passes aren't the only places where you'll need snow chains. If you plan to travel through certain parts of the Portland metro area, you'll be required to at least carry them.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation says road conditions could get especially dicey on West Burnside, west of Northwest 23rd.

PBOT plans to unfold signs that say drivers are required to carry snow chains or have traction tires.

Officials say West Burnside tops out at 950 feet, which can make for a challenging commute if we see icy roads. Their best advice: be prepared and know how to chain up if needed.

"If you're going to drive on snow and ice you need to be prepared to take responsibility for your vehicle. That means pulling over safely to apply snow chains to help you get through snowy area and icy spots," said Dylan Rivera with PBOT.

PBOT also warns if drivers try to drive on West Burnside and get stuck and abandon their vehicle in a travel lane or chain-up area, it will cost them.

Drivers will have to pay for car towing and storage fees.

ODOT says they have crews working round the clock to help keep the roads clear. However, they say if you can avoid driving, that would be the best option.
