What to do when your car starts to slide on slick roads

Slick spots on the street could be a big problem for people on the road Thursday.

FOX 12 checked in with a local driving instructor to find out what you should do if you find your car slipping and sliding on the street.

Tim, the driving instructor, says when you get behind the wheel, it's a good idea to keep a lot of distance between you and the car in front of you. This will give you enough time to brake in case someone stops or changes direction.

If you find yourself skidding on the road, you should steer in the direction that you want to go.

"I hear a lot of people say when you're driving in the snow to pump your brakes. It's not an actual pumping like this, it's push-release, push-release. So it's a lot slower in motion. You do it when you actually start to feel the car skid," said Tim. "The other thing is, people tend to keep their foot on the brake when they're in a skid and that doesn't get you out of a skid."

The Oregon Driver Education Center offers classes once a month that teach you how to drive in extreme weather conditions.
