Schools close, flights cancel, some without power as winter storm approaches Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A large winter storm is set to arrive in the Portland metro late Thursday morning and already the weather has caused some problems.

As of 9:15 a.m., about 711 PGE customers are without power due to high winds.

Washington County dispatch officials said a large tree has fallen Southwest Scholls Ferry Road at 86th Avenue. Crews are working to remove it.

FOX 12 weather experts said the latest models show the rough weather will not hit the metro area until about 10 a.m.

Snow is expected to fall for a few hours, but once the temperatures warm up, expect to see a mix of freezing rain and sleet later in the afternoon and evening.

The National Weather service has issued a winter storm warning that will remain in effect until 2 p.m. A wind advisory is also in effect until 4 p.m.

Several school districts including Portland Public Schools, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard-Tualatin,  and Salem-Keizer canceled school Thursday in preparation for the storm. For the full closure list, click here

A number of flights have been canceled in and out of Portland, many of them Alaska Airlines flights. Be sure to check your flight status at PortofPortland.com.

TriMet officials said Thursday morning that some buses have already been chained in anticipation for difficult road conditions, but they asked riders to consider avoiding travel. 

The Oregon Zoo announced it has closed its doors Thursday. There will also be no Zoo Lights. The Grotto is also closed and has canceled the Christmas Festival of Lights Thursday night. 

The Salem area will most likely see rain by the time the participation arrives. Still, emergency crews are on high alert. Salem officials would like to remind residents if they see a downed tree on a road to call Public Works Dispatch at 503-588-6333. For downed power lines, call 911.

The Columbia River Gorge should expect blizzard conditions today with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and snow accumulations between 4 to 8 inches, according to FOX 12 meteorologists. Snow and freezing rain will fall most of the day and into the evening.
