Icy roads, sidewalks prove treacherous for people in metro area

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Navigating the icy roads, whether on foot or by car, was quite a challenge for some people living in the higher elevations around the Portland metro Friday morning.

Although the icy roads left over from Thursday's storm are expected to thaw out Friday, ice in areas like the West Hills and Mt. Scott neighborhood may stick around a little longer.

People tried desperately not to slide across sidewalks, driveways and roads along Barnes Road in the West Hills after a downed tree knocked down some power lines and slowed traffic. Cars crept slowly up and down streets, skidding and sliding across sheets of ice that had accumulated overnight.

Crashes, fender benders and other traffic issues were present throughout Thursday and into Friday.

Traffic officials have closed a number of roads due to icy or dangerous conditions. One Oregon State Trooper described I-84 near Roster Rock as “an ice skating rink.” For the latest updates on road conditions and closures, visit TripCheck.com

Rain is expected through most of the day Friday with daytime highs reaching the low 40s. Check out the FOX 12 Weather page for the latest forecast information.
