PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The icy conditions had an affect on air traffic in and out of Portland International Airport, canceling almost 160 flights on Friday.

Most of the canceled flights were arriving from or departing to Alaska through Alaska Airlines, but Air Canada, Southwest and American Airlines also experienced significant travel disruptions, leaving hundreds stranded.

Airport crews were busy de-icing planes Friday morning. It is a time consuming process, and some airlines may have canceled their short flights for that very reason.

After flight cancellations, the rebooking process can be a nightmare.

Ken Saich has been living that nightmare for the past 24 hours. The Vietnam-era veteran arrived at PDX Thursday morning from Dallas, Texas.

Saich was just trying to get home to southern Oregon but was forced to spend the night in Portland.

"They keep canceling it, you know, and you just wait and wait to get the next flight. Next thing you know it's all canceled," said Saich.

Thankfully for Saich, his son-in-law drove up from Klamath Falls to pick him up.

For other travelers who don't have that option, they will have to wait until the winter storm ends and normal flight schedules resume.
