Corbett becomes massive ice rink after storm hits

Posted: Updated:

An ice storm that hit the city of Corbett made driving tough for residents Friday afternoon and into the evening.

The ice that covered trees, signs and roads was about two inches thick. People in cars and trucks were seen slipping and sliding on the Old Historic Highway, with some of them getting stuck in their cars for hours.

As the day went on, the wind became another factor that disrupted the usual route home for drivers.

"The roads are really horrible, Corbett Hill Road in particular," Sarah Grigsby said as she was walking near the road. "You know people are trying to go down it or come up it and they're not making it."

FOX 12 also caught up with Cole Lucky, who was riding his four-wheeler. He said he felt it was safer than taking his car.

"Everyone is sliding around, and they're all four-wheel-drive vehicles, too, so it's pretty bad," he said. "I didn't feel like taking my truck out, so this is a little bit of a safer option, but this thing still slides around, too, in this."

Both Grigsby and Lucky have lived in the area for quite some time and offered some wise advice for people passing through the Old Historic Highway.

"I'd say stay inside as long as you’re able without going crazy,” Grigsby said. “Probably having studded tires and probably having studded shoes would be a good idea."

Lucky suggests taking an even simpler approach.

"If you don't have to go out, don't go out."
