Portland police arrested a driver late Saturday night after a short chase followed by the driver ramming into a police vehicle and attempting to run away from the scene on foot.

Officers from the North Precinct tried to stop a driver leaving Delta Park just after 11 p.m. In an unsuccessful attempt to stop the fleeing car, the officer performed a PIT maneuver near North Vancouver Way and Gertz Road.

Police then tried to box in the vehicle, leading the driver, 40-year-old Mathu Dwain Karcher, to slam his vehicle into a police car and cause significant damage.

According to police, Karcher then drove to Fox Run Mobile Home Park, got out of his vehicle and attempted to run into his residence. He remained uncooperative with officers who attempted to subdue him using a stun gun, which was not effective, before finally taking him into custody.

Karcher faces charges of attempt to elude by vehicle, criminal mischief in the first degree, reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, failure to perform the duties of a driver and driving while revoked. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail.
