BEND, OR (KPTV) -

Bend police officers arrested a man Sunday evening after he allegedly tried to take a 2-year-old boy from a Bend Walmart.

Officers said 32-year-old Dennis Anderson Jr. of La Pine was seen by witnesses trying to walk out of the Walmart with a small child just before 8 p.m.

According to Bend police, the toddler had wandered away from his mother while she was shopping.

Witnesses said they saw Anderson enter the store. He began following the child and mirroring his actions.

Anderson then began talking to the boy, and after a short conversation started walking with him towards the store exit, according to police.

It was then the child’s mother realized her son was missing and called out to him. The child quickly returned to his mother and Anderson left the store alone.

After reviewing video surveillance, officers recognized Anderson and later arrested him with the assistance of the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

He is charged with attempted kidnapping.
