Avalanches shut down Highway 20 over Santiam Pass

NEAR SANTIAM PASS, OR (KPTV) -

Avalanches shut down Highway 20 over the Santiam Pass on Wednesday afternoon.

Oregon State Police reported the initial closure at around 2:30 p.m. By 3 p.m., police said a second avalanche had hit the area. 

At 7:30 p.m., OSP reported a third avalanche along Highway 20 near milepost 79.1

Highway 20 was closed near Hoodoo Ski Area, about two miles west of the Santiam Pass summit.

There was no timeline in place to reopen the highway. There were no immediate reports from police regarding possible injuries in connection with the avalanche.

There are also reports of drivers needing help and vehicles blocking Highway 20 at Santiam Pass. OSP said tow trucks are not responding to the area to help drivers Wednesday night.

OSP said a semi-truck is blocking passage on Highway 20 near milepost 83. Traffic is limited to one lane of travel.

Drivers were advised to avoid traveling over Santiam Pass and to go to tripcheck.org for updates on the highway closure.
