PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man, a pregnant woman and nine children escaped a southwest Portland house fire Thursday morning.

Fire crews responded to the 6900 block of Southwest 15th Avenue at 8:53 a.m. and saw smoke coming from the home.

The fire was burning in the attic, which had to be opened from above and below to put the fire out.

The fire was deemed to be under control at 9:30 a.m.

Firefighters had to be cautious at the scene due to icy conditions around the house and snow on the roof.

Investigators determined the fire started in the kitchen when an oven on self-cleaning mode caught fire. The fire got into the walls behind the oven and then into the attic.

There were no injuries reported, but the damage to the inside of the home is described by firefighters as extensive.

Firefighters said the children living in the home range in age from 2 to 16 years old.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene to provide assistance to the family.
