Salem digging out after Wednesday snowstorm

Posted: Updated:
SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

People in Salem got another round of falling snow Thursday morning, adding to their already thick blanket of white on the ground since Wednesday.

With school canceled Thursday and many people staying home from work, it was a very calm morning in south Salem.

Even with the snow sticking around, it was nothing but smooth sailing through the midday at the intersection at Commercial and Rural Avenue, and a lot of people were enjoying the improved driving conditions.

Most people in the Salem area had a positive attitude during the calm morning on the roads Thursday with hardly any traffic.

Wednesday night was a much different story, though, as drivers were sliding and spinning their tires on snowy hills after being caught off guard when the storm hit in the afternoon.

Some drivers just pulled over or turned around when they couldn’t move, others jumped out to give cars a little push.

Area residents say it was nothing like the situation in Portland, however. One man said his wife was stuck in the West Hills while others said their relatives were struggling for hours.

City buses were running in Salem, and emergency vehicles and most cars are moving along just fine, with the things they seem to have in common being using chains, 4-wheel drive or both.
