Officer wounded, suspect dead at shooting outside Walmart in Dallas

DALLAS, OR (KPTV) -

An officer was wounded and a suspect was killed in a shooting at a Walmart store in Dallas.

Police confirmed an officer-involved shooting took place at the store on the 300 block of Northeast Kings Valley Highway on Friday night.

Oregon State Police reported that the involved officer is with the Dallas Police Department. 

During at update late Friday evening, Lt. Bob Charpentier with the Oregon State Police confirmed that the officers were involved with the initial stop at 5:45 p.m.

Charpentier said the officers were investigating a man for a DUII related incident when the incident escalated, and one of the officers was shot in the leg.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive. The Oregon State Police later confirmed that the suspect involved in the shooting died at the scene.

Sharon Lee said she was in the parking lot at the time of the incident and told FOX 12 she heard the series of shots, describing it as "rapid fire."

The Oregon State Police will lead the investigation of the shooting at the request of the Dallas Police Chief Tom Simpson and Polk County District Attorney Aaron Felton. They are being assisted by Grande Ronde Tribal Police, Polk County Sheriff's Office, Monmouth Police Department, Independence Police Department, Salem Police Department and Dallas Fire and EMS.
