Clark Co. deputy shoots, kills suspected prowler near Ridgefield

Posted: Updated:

A Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a suspected prowler outside a rural Ridgefield home early Sunday morning.

According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy responded to a 911 call at a home in the 300 block of Northwest 289th Street after the homeowner reported a prowler trespassing on the property.

Not long after arriving, the deputy reported that he had engaged with and shot the suspect. Emergency responders were requested as the deputy attempted to provide medical aid to the suspect.

Fire and rescue crews arrived and transported the suspect to the hospital where he was declared dead.

The homeowner told FOX 12 that he had left the house that morning to get coffee, and while he was gone the suspect had tried to kick in a side door, waking up his wife. The man said the suspect asked for help getting his car out of a nearby field and became aggravated when the homeowner’s wife declined.

When the man returned home, his wife said she had called 911. The homeowner said he was trying to find the suspected prowler when he heard several gunshots.

The deputy involved in this case was not injured but has been placed on paid critical incident leave, which is standard practice for the sheriff’s office in this type of situation.

Detectives with the Regional Major Crimes team has taken over the investigation, but the initial investigation showed that the suspect did have a handgun at the time of the incident.
