An Atlanta Police officer who responded to a store where a 12-year-old girl was caught stealing shoes is receiving high praise for how he handled the situation.

Officer Milton responded to a family dollar where the pre-teen was being held by the store owner after trying to shoplift a pair of shoes.

Milton engaged with the girl and found out that she had picked up the shoes for her 5-year-old sister, but couldn't pay for them. The girl's predicament piqued the officer's interest.

The officer took the girl to her home, where he found she was the eldest of four children, ranging in age from a newborn to 12, and they were living in poor conditions. Police said there were not enough beds for all the kids and the only furniture in the house was an old sofa. He said there wasn't much food either.

The mother, who was home at the time, said she didn't work because she couldn't afford to send the kids to daycare and that her husband works but doesn't make much money.

Milton, wanting to help, bought the family four pizzas and beverages for dinner and contacted the Georgia Department of Family and Children's Services to see whether the could help with the living situation.

Atlanta Police said the officer didn't help the family in the hope of receiving any sort of recognition, and that another officer actually came forward to commend him.
