RALEIGH, N.C. (WRAL/CNN) -- A great-great grandmother was among the graduating class of 2017 at North Carolina's Wake Technical Community College.

Shirley Fuller, 70, affectionately known as "Grandma Shirley" received her associate degree in business administration.

Fuller said the road to her first college degree was a tough one. She says she attempted suicide five times and battled addiction for years.

Fuller worked as a paralegal  before deciding to enroll in college.

"I wasn't interested in going to college because I felt I was too old. And then when the last time I got married, I decided I'd rather go to college than to be married,” said Fuller.

'Grandma Shirley' says she's not stopping with her business degree.

She has already enrolled in the criminal justice program at Wake Tech and plans to get a bachelor's degree, and then go to law school.

Her goal, she says, is to open a recovery home for women struggling with addiction.
