UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Union police arrested a Whitmire woman Friday night after officers said she left a one-year-old child in a car while she shopped in Dollar Tree.

Officers said they were on routine patrol in the store parking lot on Buffalo West Springs Highway when a motorist advised them that a baby had been left in a parked vehicle.

Officers found the car, which was left running with the windows down, and said they observed a small child sleeping in a car seat in the back seat.

A short time later, police said Nancy Alexander emerged from the Dollar Tree.

When officers questioned her, Alexander reportedly told police she had only been in the store for five minutes, but police said surveillance footage revealed she had been in the store for a total of 24 minutes.

Police arrested Alexander and charged her with child neglect.

A family member was called to pick up the car and the child.

Police said DSS was also notified of the incident.
