Fifth possible death from fake Percocet pills

Posted: Updated:

State health officials said a death Sunday could possibly be the fifth death related to fake Percocet pills in central Georgia.

A spokesperson with the Georgia Department of Public Health said lab results had not yet confirmed it. There were also three other overdoses over the weekend possibly connected to the recent opioid cluster.

There were about 30 overdoses during the first full week of June.

The GBI is testing the counterfeit pills people are buying on the street. They've found they include a mix of two synthetic opioids, one of which is a new fentanyl-like drug they haven't seen in their crime lab before.

"They’re made overseas and they’ve never been studied in right now what we’re working on doing is trying to validate it," said GBI spokesperson Nelly Miles.

"To our shock it is something that’s never been seen before, which truly is a bold statement that these dealers will go to any lengths to make some profit at the expense of the people in our communities," said Miles.

The GBI hopes to have final results from the crime lab later this week.
