MULINO, OR (KPTV) -

A 26-year-old Molalla man died from injuries sustained in a crash on Highway 213 in Mulino Tuesday night.

Oregon State Police and medical personnel responded to the scene near South Union Mills Road around 8:30 p.m. where they found a 2006 custom Big Dog motorcycle ridden by Vincent Michael Merkley had collided with a 2007 Jeep Liberty driven by 25-year-old Kaelin Craig Bennett of Molalla.

According to the OSP preliminary investigation, Merkley was headed north on Highway 213 at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner when he rear-ended Bennett’s SUV.

Investigators said that Merkley was ejected from the motorcycle on impact and the bike came to rest 15-20 feet down an embankment.

The investigators also noted that while Bennett was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, witnesses said Merkley was not wearing a helmet.

Merkley was taken by ambulance to Oregon Health Science University Hospital for treatment but later died there from his injuries.

The Molalla Fire District, LifeFlight and Oregon Department of Transportation also responded to this incident.
