SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Businesses and small towns around the state are looking to cash in on this summer's total solar eclipse, and now one local baseball team is throwing its hat into the lunar ring.

The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are planning a Total Eclipse of the Park on August 21, the day of the eclipse, and a Portland blogger is buying-in to the pitch.

Jeff Sullivan, a writer for the baseball blog Fangraphs, has helped organize a mass gathering of sorts at the Eclipse game.

Sullivan, who also hosts a podcast called Effectively Wild, began discussing the possibility of the outing with his co-host, Ben Lindbergh, a writer for TheRinger.com. The two arranged to reserve a block of 50 tickets to the game at a group rate, then offered them to listeners on the podcast's group Facebook page, which has more than 6,000 followers.

"They were gone within minutes," Sullivan said. "It's like we were selling Backstreet Boys tickets or something."

Sullivan and Lindbergh, whose podcast delves into the intricate advanced statistics of baseball, arranged to secure another block of 50 tickets, which were also almost immediately claimed.

"It turns out there is a considerable overlap between baseball dorks and astronomy dorks," Sullivan explained.

Months before the game, the stadium is already half sold-out, but there are still tickets available.

"The stadium will be open at 7 a.m.," Volcanoes' marketing manager Evan Giddings said. "We're going to have our breakfast starting at 8 a.m. for fans who want to get here early."

The players will take the field at 9:30 a.m., and there will be a brief delay in the action during the eclipse.
