Expect a busy Independence Day travel weekend

This weekend is the busiest travel weekend of the summer, and the rush was on for travelers around Portland Friday.

AAA says that in Oregon alone, more than half a million people will hit the road for Independence Day getaways.

There is good news for drivers filling up the tank for the weekend. Nationally gas prices are among the lowest they’ve been for the July 4th weekend in more than a decade.

Driver Gayle Bache, who was coming back from a week-long family trip to Oregon Coast Friday, appreciated the drop.

“You know, I think they were fine,” Bache said of the prices at the pump.

At the Portland International Airport, there’s not a spike in air travel specific to the holiday, but summer is consistently busy with 60,000 people passing through every day.

A third of them use the airport before 9:00 a.m., according to Port of Portland Spokesperson Steve Johnson, so flyers planning to be wheels up before the sun is up need to give themselves extra time.

Campgrounds across the state are also packed for the weekend. Megan Lepchat of Forest Grove was enjoying a spot at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park near Buxton Friday, camping with her two kids and her parents.

“We’re checking out tomorrow,” she told FOX 12. “I think it was booked, actually, for the weekend, so we came Wednesday just for three nights.”

They booked their site roughly six weeks ago but found they would have had to try to book the area much earlier to get a space for the busy weekend.

“Maybe if we had booked it earlier, say February or March, maybe we would have gotten the weekend,” she added. “So we’ll go home and enjoy the weekend at home.”

Remember, fireworks are never allowed in Oregon State Parks or associated campgrounds or beaches, For anyone heading out to federal public lands, fireworks are never allowed there, either.
