PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Someone stole an SUV from in front of a southeast Portland family's home Friday morning, and police say it's an example of a disturbing trend of car thefts on the rise in the area.

To make matters worse for the victims, the woman whose vehicle was stolen told FOX 12 she is battling ALS and her husband was recently laid off, so they canceled their auto insurance just last week.

According to police, the SUV, a green 2000 Honda CRV with Oregon license XKS097, was stolen near Southeast 72nd Avenue and Southeast Bybee Boulevard.

The victim said she heard a commotion outside her home but didn't think anything of it. Later when she went outside where her car should have been parked in front of her house she noticed it was gone.

Portland Police Bureau officials told FOX 12 car thefts are up 68 percent in the city over last year. There have been over a hundred car thefts in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood of southeast Portland where this latest case took place.

Anyone with any information on this theft is asked to call Portland police. To track crime statistics in neighborhoods around the city, log on to PortlandOregon.gov/police.
