A sinkhole shut down a portion of Highway 212 in Damascus on Sunday, and a water main break prompted a boil water notice for some customers in the area.

The sinkhole and the water main break was reported Sunday afternoon on Highway 212 near Southeast 202nd Avenue.

The Sunrise Water Authority has issued a boil water notice for customers in the following areas due to the main break: Wiese Rd., Bohna Park, Tillstrom, Debora, Rudiger, White Crest, 190th Ct., Diana Ave., Delia, Helzer Way, Lansing Lane, Alder Springs, Sunrise customers along Foster, or east of Foster, including north/south of Hwy 212, Vogel Rd., east of Rachella Ct., El Camino Terr., Caramel Dr., Winston Rd., Fairway Dr., Adams Dr., 197th Ave., 199th Ave., Damascus Ln.

Affected customers are advised to boil any water used for drinking or eating. There is no need to boil water for bathing or flushing the toilet.

The sheriff’s office described the sinkhole as “massive”, saying initial reports indicated the sinkhole was as wide as 20 feet.

According to TripCheck.com, the westbound lane of Highway 212 remains closed. Drivers are asked to use caution as traffic is being flagged through the area through the eastbound lane.
