Posted: Updated:

The Oregon State Police are investigating a crash on Highway 99W south of McMinnville where one person has died and two more people had to be taken to the hospital by helicopter.

According to OSP investigators, three cars were involved in the crash – a passenger car, an SUV and a pickup, which ended up hitting a fourth vehicle and running into a home nearby.

The crash investigation has all lanes of traffic closed on Hwy 99 for a 2-mile stretch south of McMinnville.

The Oregon Department of Transportation also responded to the scene and told FOX 12 they thought it would be after 7 p.m. before the road reopened.

The preliminary investigation by the OSP indicated that the passenger car was heading north and slowing down to make a left-hand turn onto Southwest Durham Lane when it was rear-ended by the pickup.

That collision pushed the car into the southbound lane where it was hit on the passenger side of the vehicle by the SUV. The crash also left a trailer, which was being towed by the truck, in the middle of the roadway.

A man riding in the car died at the scene, and a young boy riding in the car and a woman riding in the SUV were taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital. There is no Information at the time on injuries to the other people involved in the crash.

Julie Culp’s father-in-law and grandparents live near the scene of the crash, and the truck ran into a car in their driveway before ending up going through a wall in their home.

She told FOX 12 that the T-style intersection where the crash occurred is a frequent location for wrecks, either from people turning onto Durham Lane or passing recklessly.

Culp added that she felt lucky because her father-in-law had been standing in front of the garage only two minutes before the crash happened.

“The truck is halfway into the laundry room, the car is in the garage and it wasn’t before,” she said. “Half of the garage is totaled and taken out, so it was pretty bad.”
