MCMINNVILLE, OR (KPTV) -

It’s the kind of burglary that just doesn’t make sense. Why would anyone steal an iconic jersey belonging to a Hall of Fame coach, and an NCAA championship ring from the 2004 football team?

That’s the question a lot of people on the campus of Linfield College in McMinnville are asking.

“It was very targeted, so that’s kind of strange to a lot of us,” Linfield Athletic Director Garry Killgore told FOX 12.

When Killgore came into the athletic building for a workout Sunday morning, he noticed a table out of place, then other strange things including a classroom door that was propped open and an open window.

After looking around, he realized Linfield legend Ad Rutschman’s retired jersey – which had been in a frame hanging on the wall – was missing.

Around the corner, so was the 2004 ring from inside a smashed trophy case. Other items in the same case, however, were left alone.

“Someone had to have known exactly what they were after,” Killgore said.

Killgore said it likely would have taken two people to get the framed jersey off the second-story wall. Then, the crooks would need a pair of wire-cutters to clip the back of the frame open.

The empty frame was ditched in a nearby classroom. McMinnville police are now processing it for fingerprints.

The items that were taken don’t have any monetary value, and would certainly raise a red flag at a pawn shop anyway, but to the Linfield athletic community they are priceless symbols of the history and character of the department.

Now, campus leaders are asking whoever took them to bring them back, no questions asked.

“You’re stealing from the whole Linfield community, and Ad [Rutschman] would be the first person to tell you that,” Killgore added. “It’s not about him. It’s about us. Always has been.”
