Middle of Millen Drive Independence Day Parade: A tiny but lively tradition

Posted: Updated:

It’s an annual Tigard tradition that gets bigger and bigger every Fourth of July. It's called the Middle of Millen Drive Independence Day Parade.

When it comes to parades, it’s not the biggest or the most crowded. But that’s exactly what Tigard neighbors find so charming.

“That’s the best thing about this is that it’s so community-oriented and it’s small enough that you really get the small town feel,” said Stephanie Somanchi.

Every Fourth of July, neighbors line the less than a mile parade route that circles around the block of Millen Drive.

“It started right down the street with a neighbor saying, ‘Hey, let’s get this going’ and through the years, it’s just gotten more and more and more bigger and bigger,” said Stephanie Swayne.

While small, it’s definitely lively.

“It’s incredible,” said Swayne. “It’s incredible to walk out your front door and have this on your doorstep and the community comes together and just relaxes and has a good time and it’s just, it’s fun.”

Tigard Police, kids on bikes, and even llamas were in this year's parade.

"It’s a lovely tradition,” said Somanchi.

Swayne said, “It’s so Tigard. That’s one thing I love about it.”

It’s a Tigard tradition, on a tiny drive, with a big personality.

“I think you’re going to get a great idea of what hometown USA looks like today,” said Somanchi.
