Tigard police, TVF&R on lookout for illegal fireworks

Posted: Updated:

The Fourth of July comes with people setting off fireworks, some doing it legally and others, illegally.

FOX 12 rode along with Tigard Police and Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue as they went on fireworks calls.

Both agencies had extra people on duty as they went to call after call of reports of people setting off illegal fireworks.

In Oregon, any firework is illegal if it explodes, flies in the air or travels more than 12 feet from the ground. Some of the calls Tuesday night were false alarms, and while people had fireworks, they were not illegal.

Others though, like a group of people at the Glacier Lilly Apartments in Tigard, were setting off illegal ones. A large bag was confiscated, but no one was cited.

TVF&R works with police agencies such as Tigard every Fourth of July for a very specific reason.

“We’re here to help the police officers identify the illegal fireworks because in Oregon they make a lot of fireworks that look like they are illegal fireworks, or just for marketing and packaging can be real deceiving when they actually are legal Oregon fireworks,” said a TVF&R deputy fire marshal.

Tigard police tell FOX 12 they encourage people to go the professional shows instead of lighting fireworks in their streets or yards.
