PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

City officials held a preview Thursday of a new beach that will soon open right along Portland’s waterfront.

The new area is called Poet's Beach and is located in the South Waterfront Park on the west side of the Willamette River at Southwest Moody Avenue and River Parkway. It opens Wednesday, July 12, and will stay open through Labor Day.

The beach will be the first designated swimming area Portland Parks and Rec has managed in the Willamette River.

City officials said the goals for the beach is to serve a wide range for residents, including families and people with varying levels of swimming proficiency. They also hope the beach will connect people with the river and serve to educate the public on the river environment and swim safety.

American Medical Response river lifeguards were on site Thursday surveying the area and will be on the beach from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. Life jackets will also be available to visitors.
