Portland officer paralyzed in training accident stands to receive promotion

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A promotion ceremony for the Portland Police Bureau Thursday featured a powerful moment as an officer paralyzed in a training accident rose to his feet to accept his new rank.

Officer Paul Meyer was able to stand up and receive his promotion to the rank of sergeant thanks to some special medical technology.

Meyer was paralyzed from the waist back in 2012 during an ATV training session on Hayden Island when a tree snapped and fell on top of him.

Portland Police Bureau Chief Mike Marshman was nearly at a loss for words after watching Meyer stand.

“It's hard to follow up with that,” he said. “I was working with the former chief when Paul got injured that day, and I went to the hospital. It’s a day I will never forget and lots of folks here won't either. After what we just witnessed, it's hard to say any words of inspiration.”

After more than nine months of recovery, Meyer returned to work in the bureau's training division.
