Firefighters respond to string of car fires in SE Portland

Posted: Updated:

Fire crews were called to multiple car fires within a ten-block radius in southeast Portland Tuesday morning.

Portland Fire and Rescue said three reports of car fires came in between 5:45 a.m. and 6:10 a.m.

The first car fire was reported in the 800 block of Southeast 27th Avenue. Just minutes later, another vehicle fire sparked a couple of blocks away at Southeast 25th Avenue and Morrison Street.

Crews responded to a third car fire at Southeast 15th Avenue and Oak Street around 6: 08 a.m.

An owner of one of the damaged cars on Oak Street said he heard popping sounds similar to a firework and came outside to investigate.

“I was just scared that maybe somebody had fallen asleep in there and had lit the car on fire,” said Joseph Karacek. “I can’t imagine how somebody could be so cruel and thoughtless and dangerous. What if the building right next to it caught on fire?”

Authorities believe the fires may have been intentionally set. Police are asking for any information that may lead to a suspect.

Firefighters are working to see if the fires are connected.
